Jozan hot springs [topographical drawing]

Hokkaido (Japan) - Topographical drawing using non-western perspective. Inscribed on verso in faint pencil: "Jozan hot springs [illeg.], 18 Aug. '73." In his Preliminary Report of the First Season's Work of the Geological Survey of Yesso (1874), Lyman records seeing blende, galena, pyrites, and orpiment deposits at the Jozan hot springs, southwest of Sapporo, "on the upper waters of the Toyahira."

Eva and Miss Shaw (the new nurse) travel by jinrikishas, or small two-wheeled vehicles pulled by one runner. Eva has a big abscess on her breast, and though it is healing, it has affected the nursing of the baby.
