Cape Breton Island (N. S. ) - Mr. Belloni writes to inquire about the status of Lyman's incomplete survey work on the Block House vein of coal at Cow Bay, Cape Breton. He asks whether Mr. Lesley has all of the information needed to complete the work, and when to "anticipate the receipt of drawings." Note that Lyman's Cow Bay was renamed Port Morien in 1895.

Boston (Mass.) - Hoar thanks Lyman for sending a copy of his "Geological and Topographical Map of Japan," and tells him that it has been deposited in the Town Library. The included enveloped is addressed to Lyman in Northampton, Massachusetts, and has a note in pencil: "Judge E. R. Hoar."

Calcutta (India) - Letter accompanies a patent petition with drawings and specifications for Lyman's solar compass, to be forwarded to the United States Patent office along with a model of the compass and a filing fee, which Mr. Lesley has the care of.
