Du Bois, W. E. B. (William Edward Burghardt), 1868-1963
Du Bois refers to Van Vechten's book as "A blow to the face." Du Bois explains "it is an affront to the hospitality of black folk and to the intelligence of white." Du Bois is thoroughly disgusted by the book, urges others not to read it. Eventually published in The Crisis, Vol. 33, No. 2 under the title "Books."
