Samp King tells his cousin Louisa Gass about sleigh rides, visiting a spelling school, and the upcoming marriage of Mollie Sterr and Dr. Johnston, which he believes is a bad match. There has been a lot of drama in Perry County because of a house fire that killed a man, his wife and 2 of their children. The oldest son escaped the fire but was a suspect because a bottle of chloroform had been discovered. After a six day trial he was acquitted though most people still thought he was guilty. Samp also talks about an ice skating party and a family dinner party at Christmastime. He tells of the first words of baby Willie and the idea of buying the family home from the rest of the heirs and improving it over the summer.
