Campesinos (one on horse) waving, 1970
"Campesinos, the rural peasants of Cuba. If our assigned cane fields were a long walk from the camp, we'd hitch rides with
campesinos driving farm machinery, and we often saw them on their horses. When asked 'what has the revolution done for you?'
they would invariably smile and say 'I can read.' Bundles of books strapped across the rear of their saddles indicated their
continuing studies in adult education classes. The nationwide literacy campaign was one of the great early successes of the
Cuban revolution, and we witnessed its popularity in the countryside."
