Formal portrait of Winthrop E. Stone (Class of 1882) of the Experiment Station. Typewritten note on back reads: "Winthrop E. Stone was born on June 12, 1862 in Chesterfield N.H.. He received the degree of B.Sc. from the Massachusetts Agricultural College in 1882; Ph.D. Goettingen, 1888; LL.D., Michigan Agricultural College in 1907. During the year 1882 he was Scientific Expert, Houghton Farm, Mountainville, NY. From 1884 -1886 he was employed as Assistant Chemist at the Massachusetts Experiment Station; Chemist, Tennessee Ext. Sta., 1888-89; Professor of Chemistry, Purdue Univ. 1889-1900; Vice President, Purdue, 1892-1900; President 1900-21. He died July 17, 1921 while scaling Mt. Eon in the Canadian Rockies. Photograph made by F.A. Waugh, June 1921." A smaller copy of the photograph has a handwritten note: "The late President Stone of Purdue Univ. - his last picture."
