First UMass Dept. of Music graduate teaching assistant in the African Music and Jazz, working with Frederick Tillis, Horace Boyer, and Max Roach in the early 1970s and from 1976 to 1980 was an Assistant Professor of Music in the department. Describes first experience as a student at UMass, playing clarinet in the marching band, becoming part of the University's jazz program.
