In this oral history interview conducted by son Joel Halpern, Carl Halpern talks about various aspects of the Electro Chemical Company where he worked from 1917-1965. He mentions Frost Appliance Stores, Bright Star Battery Company, Universal Car Loading, Bert's Trucking, and the Factor which were companies that did business with Electro Chemical. He talks about the Board of Directors, capital worth, gross annual volume, the labor force, their relationship with the car manufacturing industry and the company going bankrupt multiple times. He also speaks of the building that the company occupied and the various names of the company before it was known as Electro Chemical and Engraving Company. Joel Halpern, the interviewer, asks questions about records and how to track down company information in the interest of doing further research. Carl lists names of relatives and others who worked at the company and some of their departments. Finally, he talks about salaries, other companies that existed in the neighborhood but no longer exist there, shipping, problems with the Teamsters Union, unionization, creation of a pension plan and United Mine Workers District 50.
