(00:01:27)Engels was a patient at the Vermont State Hospital in 1972 and later received a graduate degree in communications in 1977. He helped develop a television operation at Vermont State Hospital in 1978. In 1980, the Vermont Liberation Organization emerged.
(00:04:33)Engels helped establish in telephone conferences and television conferences in Vermont. Engels describes the steps to develop satellite conferencing.
(00:11:18)In 1988, he and others prepared a proposal to support consumer/ex-patient activities. This required research into the finances and locating a physically accessible space. Ultimately, they developed a "high-end local access cable" production.
(00:16:41)"Psychiatric Survivors" television show began before the equipment arrived. They, instead, went to the cable access channel in Burlington, which trained the team in directing, producing, and camera work.
(00:19:00)Engels has not felt any commercial pressure regarding the topics they cover.
(00:20:25)Self-Help Live! is a global satellite program in collaboration with a South Carolina public broadcasting organization. During their first session, they received several responses from across the country.
